CryptoKitties Charity Raises $15,000 For Children’s Hospital
In April, 21.6 ether tokens was raised through the charity initiative Kitties For A Cause, which was launched by Bella’s Kitty den. These tokens were worth approximately $15,000 at the time that the fundraising happened. The majority of this money was raised by hosting a CryptoKitty auction through the marketplace.
In total, 370 kitties were donated to the BKD marketplace, where users could then bid on them, with the funds going to the Seattle Children’s Hospital. The brains behind Bella’s Kitty Den are CryptoKitty fan Bella, who is just 10 years old, and her father Brian. They used BKD to teach Bella simple business skills, and have bred over 1,200 kitties so far. Speaking of the charity donation, Bella said;
“One day while playing, I said we should give away some of our Kitties since we have so many of them. Dad asked who we should give them to. I told him kids in the hospital who are hurting. So, with help from my dad and others from the CryptoKitties community, we have created the Kitties For A Cause fund.”
The initiative was promoted through the CK Medium page, where Yasmine Nadery, a spokeswoman said;
“This event was created by a CryptoKitties community member, and we were in awe of this initiative this young girl took. When she and her father told us about it, we jumped at the opportunity to partner with them and our community creators to spread the word about Bella’s cause.”
This is a great move, and there is hope that it could spark more charitable events like this in the future. This is not the only time that cryptocurrencies have been used to raise money for charity. Just this year, gamers raised over $30,000 in Ethereum tokens for Syria through UNICEF. UNICEF Australia is currently hosting an event where donors can contribute processing power to mine cryptocurrency from home for charity.
Ashton Kutcher also made headlines recently by donating $4million worth of XRP to Ellen DeGeneres’ charity using his mobile phone, to show how it works. Whilst it is not always the most ideal way to donate to a charity thanks to the volatility in price, it is a fantastic example of how cryptocurrencies are becoming more and more accepted in everyday life. Initiatives like UNIC Australia’s are brilliant as well, as it is a perfect example of how a lot of money can be raised for charities by simply leaving their computer running in the background.
